Active & Passive Voice

Active vs Passive Voice

Voice tells us whether the subject of a sentence is performing or receiving an action.

Active Voice

In active voice, the subject does the action. This is the most common and usually clearest structure.

  • The chef cooked the meal. (chef = subject, doing the action)
  • The dog chased the cat.

Active voice is direct, energetic, and usually preferred in writing.

Passive Voice

In passive voice, the subject receives the action. The doer may or may not be mentioned.

  • The meal was cooked by the chef.
  • The window was broken. (we don't know who broke it)

Structure: subject + to be + past participle (+ by + agent, optional)

When to Use Each

Active voice is better for:

  • Most everyday and creative writing
  • Making it clear who is responsible

Passive voice is appropriate for:

  • Scientific and academic writing (focus on findings, not researcher)
  • When the doer is unknown or unimportant
  • When you want to avoid blame: Mistakes were made.

Converting Between Voices

Active โ†’ Passive: Move the object to subject position, add to be + past participle.

  • Tom kicked the ball. โ†’ The ball was kicked by Tom.
