Paragraph Structure

A well-written paragraph has three clear parts, each with a specific job.

1. Topic Sentence The opening sentence that states the main idea of the paragraph. Everything else in the paragraph should relate back to this.

2. Supporting Details Facts, examples, explanations, or evidence that develop and support the topic sentence. Aim for two to four supporting sentences.

3. Concluding Sentence The closing sentence that restates the main idea in different words and signals the end of the paragraph.

Example paragraph: Dogs make excellent pets for families. (topic sentence) They are loyal companions who provide comfort and entertainment for both children and adults. They also encourage physical activity through daily walks. (supporting details) For these reasons, a dog can be a wonderful addition to any home. (concluding sentence)
