What is Creative Writing?

Creative writing is any writing that uses imagination and originality to produce something unique โ€” fiction, poetry, personal essays, screenplays, and more.

Developing Your Voice

Your writing voice is your unique style โ€” the way your personality comes through in your words. It includes your word choices, sentence rhythm, tone, and perspective. Don't try to imitate others; develop your own.

Creating Memorable Characters

Strong characters are specific, complex, and contradictory โ€” like real people.

Give your characters:

  • Specific details: Not "she liked music" but "she played jazz piano alone at 11pm"
  • Flaws: Perfection is boring. What is their weakness?
  • Desires and fears: What do they want? What do they fear losing?
  • Voice: How do they talk? What do they say when nervous?

Techniques for Building Tension

  • Short sentences at crucial moments: He reached the door. He turned the handle. It was unlocked.
  • Foreshadowing: hint at what's coming without revealing it
  • Unanswered questions: leave the reader wanting to know what happens
  • Pacing: slow down during intense scenes

Flashbacks and Foreshadowing

Flashback โ€” interrupts the present timeline to show a past event, adding depth and explanation.

Foreshadowing โ€” hints at future events to create anticipation and dread.

Show, Don't Tell

Always prefer showing over telling:

  • โŒ He was nervous.
  • โœ… He kept checking his watch, straightening his collar for the fourth time.
