Revising vs. Editing

These two steps in the writing process are different but equally important.

Revising = improving the content and structure Editing = fixing grammar, spelling, and punctuation

Always revise before you edit.

Revising: The Big Picture

When revising, ask:

  • Is my main idea clear?
  • Do my paragraphs flow in a logical order?
  • Does each paragraph have a strong topic sentence?
  • Have I supported every claim with evidence?
  • Are there any unnecessary sentences I can cut?

Editing: The Details

When editing, check:

  • Spelling: Are all words spelled correctly?
  • Grammar: Do subjects and verbs agree? Are tenses consistent?
  • Punctuation: Are commas, apostrophes, and full stops used correctly?
  • Capitalisation: Are all proper nouns capitalised?
  • Sentence variety: Mix short and long sentences for better rhythm.

Useful Strategies

  1. Read your work aloud โ€” your ear catches errors your eye misses.
  2. Take a break before reviewing โ€” fresh eyes spot more problems.
  3. Use a checklist to ensure you've covered every area.
  4. Ask a peer to read your work โ€” another perspective is invaluable.
  5. Read backwards (last sentence first) for spelling errors.
