What is a Verb?

A verb is a word that expresses an action, occurrence, or state of being. Every sentence must have a verb.

Types of Verbs

Action verbs describe what a subject does: run, think, build, laugh.

Linking verbs connect the subject to a description rather than showing action: be, seem, appear, smell, feel.

  • She is happy. / The soup smells delicious.

Helping (auxiliary) verbs work alongside a main verb to express tense, mood, or voice: have, has, will, can, must, should.

  • She has finished her work. / He will arrive tomorrow.

Verb Tenses

Verbs change form to show when an action happens:

  • Past: She walked home.
  • Present: She walks home.
  • Future: She will walk home.

Subject-Verb Agreement

The verb must always agree with its subject in number:

  • Singular subject โ†’ singular verb: The dog runs.
  • Plural subject โ†’ plural verb: The dogs run.
