What are Context Clues?

Context clues are hints found within the surrounding text that help you figure out the meaning of an unfamiliar word โ€” without using a dictionary.

Skilled readers use context clues constantly as they read.

Types of Context Clues

Definition Clues

The author directly defines the word in the same sentence or the next.

  • Photosynthesis, the process by which plants convert sunlight into food, occurs in the leaves.

Synonym Clues

A word with a similar meaning appears nearby.

  • She was elated โ€” overjoyed โ€” when she heard the news.

Contrast/Antonym Clues

A word with the opposite meaning gives a hint. Look for signal words: unlike, but, however, although.

  • Unlike her gregarious sister who loved parties, Maria was shy.

Example Clues

Examples given near the word help clarify its meaning. Look for: for example, such as, like.

  • Carnivores, such as lions, wolves, and eagles, eat only meat.

Restatement Clues

The same idea is repeated in simpler words.

  • The archaeologist discovered an ancient artefact โ€” a tool that was thousands of years old.
