What is Vocabulary?

Vocabulary is the set of words you know and use. A strong vocabulary helps you understand what you read and express yourself precisely when you write or speak.

Building vocabulary isn't just about memorising definitions โ€” it's about understanding how words are built and how context shapes meaning.

Prefixes and Suffixes

Words are often built from smaller pieces called affixes. Knowing common affixes unlocks the meaning of thousands of words.

Common prefixes:

  • un- = not/opposite โ†’ unhappy, unlock
  • pre- = before โ†’ preview, prehistoric
  • re- = again โ†’ replay, rewrite
  • mis- = wrongly โ†’ misunderstand, misspell

Common suffixes:

  • -ful = full of โ†’ careful, hopeful
  • -less = without โ†’ careless, hopeless
  • -er / -or = one who โ†’ teacher, actor
  • -able = able to be โ†’ readable, comfortable

Synonyms and Antonyms

Synonyms are words with similar meanings: big / large / enormous / huge.

Antonyms are words with opposite meanings: brave โ†” cowardly, hot โ†” cold.

Using a variety of synonyms makes your writing more interesting. Using precise antonyms makes your comparisons sharper.

Context Clues

When you meet an unfamiliar word, look at the surrounding sentence for clues:

"The explorer was intrepid โ€” she crossed the desert alone without any fear."

The phrase "without any fear" tells you intrepid means brave or fearless, even without a dictionary.
