What is a Pronoun?
A pronoun is a word that replaces a noun to avoid repetition. The noun it replaces is called its antecedent.
Maria said Maria was tired. β Maria said she was tired.
Types of Pronouns
Personal pronouns refer to people or things: I, you, he, she, it, we, they, me, him, her, us, them.
Possessive pronouns show ownership: mine, yours, his, hers, ours, theirs.
- That book is mine. / Is this pen yours?
Reflexive pronouns reflect back to the subject: myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself, ourselves, themselves.
- She taught herself to code.
Relative pronouns introduce relative clauses: who, whom, whose, which, that.
- The student who won the prize was delighted.

A pronoun must agree with its antecedent in number and gender:
