What is a Pronoun?

A pronoun is a word that replaces a noun to avoid repetition. The noun it replaces is called its antecedent.

Maria said Maria was tired. β†’ Maria said she was tired.

Types of Pronouns

Personal pronouns refer to people or things: I, you, he, she, it, we, they, me, him, her, us, them.

Possessive pronouns show ownership: mine, yours, his, hers, ours, theirs.

  • That book is mine. / Is this pen yours?

Reflexive pronouns reflect back to the subject: myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself, ourselves, themselves.

  • She taught herself to code.

Relative pronouns introduce relative clauses: who, whom, whose, which, that.

  • The student who won the prize was delighted.

Pronoun–Antecedent Agreement

A pronoun must agree with its antecedent in number and gender:

  • βœ… Each student must bring his or her ID.
  • βœ… The students must bring their IDs.
